International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year’s theme is #BalanceforBetter as gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. Progress has been made to protect and promote women’s rights in recent times but despite this, according to the UN there is nowhere in the world where women can claim to have all the same rights and opportunities as men. Based in Newcastle, Shared Interest brings together individuals who are looking for an alternative to a donating and want to reduce poverty through trade. More than 11,500 members now invest as little as £100 each and this enabled Shared Interest to support over 175 producer groups last year alone. This helped more than 470,000 individuals in 63 countries, 39% of whom were women. This International Women’s Day, Shared Interest has invited female farmers and artisans to describe how investors in the UK are creating a better future for their family and community.
