Sunflowers Brighten Up Downtown Manhattan Beach Thanks To MB Man

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Patches of sunflowers dot the downtown Manhattan Beach landscape near Vons and Union Bank near Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Valley Drive. These days, with the coronavirus pandemic, the flowers are a bright spot in a challenged world. But they’d be a bright spot anytime and the beauty they bring to the streets of Manhattan Beach ushers in hope for growth and change. Manhattan Beach resident Nate Hubbard is the man behind the sunflower patches. The most visible one perhaps is at the corner of Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Valley drive right in front of the Vons sign. But if you look elsewhere, you’re bound to see more in planters in the Vons parking lot as well as at Union Bank where a statuesque row stands tall. Now retired, Hubbard and his wife Stephanie have lived in Manhattan Beach since the 1980s, raising three daughters and renovating their home four times, he said, chuckling.
