Dictionary.com’s new definitions help create a better world

Language doesn’t just help us communicate, it is an important part of how we understand the world. The definitions that are given to words affect how we perceive them and popular phases show social attitudes and shape our understanding of the world. As social norms change, language needs to as well and the lexicographers at Dictionary.com have just made the biggest update yet to the popular online dictionary. 2020 has been a year ripe with social change and increased awareness on some topics and in light of that, the dictionary has revised definitions of over 11,000 words; revised etymologies of over 7000 words and added 1200 new etymologies. It’s also added 650 new entries; 2,100 new definitions and 1,700 new pronunciations. People turn to a dictionary when they can’t understand something, and if the definition is incomplete or incorrect then social perception will be as well. That’s why it’s important for dictionaries to keep adding new words or updating old definitions.
