Earlier this year the Guardian reported that senior doctors from overseas appointed to fill key roles in UK hospitals were being blocked from taking up their jobs because their NHS salaries were too low under immigration rules. Doctors also claim they face deportation if they make errors on immigration forms.

“Shortages of this magnitude mean care for patients is suffering and staff are being stretched far too thinly. Unless something major happens quickly, more and more employees will quit, making a bad situation much worse,” said Sara Gorton, head of health at the union Unison.
NHS England said the guidance was issued in January and local teams must decide “how best to keep patients safe”.
The incident has prompted concern among GPs and patient representatives. “Patients who have attended these two hospitals will now be very worried about whether their care might have been compromised by this IT bungle”, said Rachel Power, the chief executive of the Patients Association.

The measure was expected to bring countless new cases of molestation to light. But it has not satisfied victims’ groups because it doesn’t compel reporting of abuses made in confession nor does it force dioceses to tell authorities when abuses are reported.
