TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – Efforts to restore electricity in New Jersey are nearing completion nearly a week after Tropical Storm Isaias tore through the state. The state’s utilities are reporting 6,659 homes and businesses remain without power, down from more than 1 million.

As schools nationwide struggle to finalize reopening plans, some have abruptly changed course because of coronavirus outbreaks or pushback from the community. One school district in New Jersey voted this week to hold all classes remotely, despite Governor Phil Murphy insisting for months on some form of in-person classes.
The New Jersey Supreme Court said the state’s COVID-19 Emergency Bond Act was constitutional, but officials will need to certify that projected revenue and fiscal shortfalls were “as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic” before they can borrow.
PSE&G reported approximately 575,000 outages statewide — that’s 25% of its customers. There are 2,800 workers out attempting to restore power, and they’ve requested another 1,700 workers from as far away as Oklahoma, Iowa and Nova Scotia to help.
New York’s reported toll of coronavirus deaths in nursing homes currently stands at 6,600, but health officials are only counting residents who died on site and not later in hospitals or other medical facilities.
