“By portraying Hong Kongers as the ‘right’ kind of immigrant, distinct from migrants at the US-Mexico border or refugees across the Mediterranean, Western lawmakers see the Asian city as their own political theatre,” Cheng wrote. “They claim the mantle of human rights defenders by feigning solidarity, while espousing racist and xenophobic policies at home.”
Fund flows from mainland China were particularly strong. For the first eight months, net flows from China to Hong Kong stocks via the Hong Kong Stock Exchange surged to more than $55 billion, up nearly 190% from a year ago, according to estimates by China Galaxy Securities.
“NCB Kolkata apprehended two main suppliers of the seized drug from Dumdum and Durga Nagar area of Kolkata. The accused have been identified as Ashim Ray and Ranjan Mishra,” the NCB said in a statement. Hong Kong police later confirmed the rough arrest of the young girl in a statement, claiming that she had run ‘in a suspicious manner’ and officers had used ‘minimum necessary force’ to apprehend her.
The Hong Kong journalist association head, Chris Yeung, said the raid was “horrendous”. “I think in some third-world countries there has been this kind of press freedom suppression, I just didn’t expect it to be in Hong Kong,” he told media.
