The butterfly has been re-introduced to the UK from continental Europe as part of an almost 40-year conservation project. Experts say that the insects have established a “stronghold” at core sites around the country, and in some cases have naturally colonized some areas in southern England.

Tony Lewis, head of policy at the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, said the results showed venues had been “cutting corners”, and told the programme: “I’m concerned we’ve got an indicator of hygiene failure and potential breakdown in terms of management of hygiene in those businesses.”
Mr Warrington added: “I think there will be a doubt from people about going abroad even next year, so I hope a lot of the new customers we’re getting through at the moment might find they like it and keep with it and upgrade their equipment for years to come.”
