For the duration of the 10-year project, the finished camera will collect images of about 20 billion galaxies. The final product will be designed so the sensors will be able to spot objects that are “100 million times dimmer than those visible to the naked eye.”
The goal of the camera is to drive unprecedented astrophysics research and help scientists understand how galaxies have evolved over time. The data collected will feed into the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time(LSST)- a collection of galaxies and motions of astrophysical objects.
“It’s a milestone that brings us a big step closer to exploring fundamental questions about the universe in ways we haven’t been able to before,” said said JoAnne Hewett, SLAC’s chief research officer and associate lab director for fundamental physics, in a statement.
Thirty-one nations—the 29 NATO members plus Finland and Sweden—are taking part in the exercise, which will run until November 7 in central and eastern Norway, the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea. Although numbers have dropped dramatically since their peak five years ago, rickety boats crammed with people still arrive from Turkey, circumventing increased patrols put in place when the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, vowed to “open the gates” to Europe for hundreds of thousands of refugees.
Last year, the US unilaterally withdrew form the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty, which committed it and the other signatory, Russia with the second largest nuclear stockpile, to getting rid of all nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of 500 to 5,500 kilometers (310 to 3,417 miles).
However, critics fear that the EU’s political division, geopolitical ambition and economic fragility make it ill equipped to stand up forcefully to Beijing. “The Commission does like to engage with issues and make strong statements, as they have done on Hong Kong lately. But in my experience, it is rarely backed up with firm action,” […]
It looks very much like “more Outer Worlds”, basically, which may not be a radical expansion, but it’s no bad thing either. Alice of Bee’s The Outer Worlds review actually convinced me to play it for a few hours last year, on the grounds that a perfectly alright, a-bit-safe-but-good lighthearted shooty RPG time was just […]
On Wednesday, AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford said they had halted trials of their Covid-19 vaccine to investigate the “potentially unexpected illness” of one volunteer. GSK and France’s Sanofi are also working on a coronavirus vaccine, and other vaccines are in development around the world, in China, Russia and the US. Around two dozen […]
